Vale Matt Price

One thing that’s been crystal clear about this campaign is how many journos and pundits spent their time carrying on like porkchops, and it’s not just the bitchslapping candidates and flirty emails style of journo. So it’s very sad to hear that one of the good ones, Matt Price, has died today aged 45. He’ll be missed.

  2. Pavlov's Cat says:

I’m very sorry to hear that.

  3. RIP Matt. We missed you mate in these last few weeks. I suspect Air travel has done for our friend. Kid’s Just don’t smoke…and just don’t fly.

    Matt – Goodbye sweet prince.

  4. Stephen Hill says:

    Yep, this is sad.

  5. nasking says:

Sad to hear. My best wishes to his family.

  6. Mules says:

Sad to hear, especially after Barry made mention of him this morning on insiders.

  7. jinmaro says:

It is tragic that Matt Price died so young from a brain tumour.

And you do wonder about the effects of radiation to the brain from mobile phones.

However, I don’t recall that as a journalist he ever spoke truth to power, and his pieces were generally shallow, banal and fundamentally respectful of power.

I don’t recall anything he wrote for the GG which was either courageous, challenging, or insightful:: the true test of journalistic integrity and worth.

  8. mbahnisch says:

    Very sad news indeed.

  9. Mercurius says:

    Unalloyed tragedy.

  10. mick says:

I for one will miss his writing very much. My thoughts are with his family.

  11. jinmaro says:

Oh, forget to say. Annabel Crabbe was the SMH’s riposte to Matt Price. I agree with Nasking’s recent summation on Road to Surfdom that while superficially amusing Ms Crabbe essentially is a “Princess of Pap”. But, she’s much less respectful of power than Matt Price was a journalist for the GG, and so in that sense, is a better and more worthwhile one.

  12. Craig Mc says:

Bloody awful. Price was one of the good ones and his like is sorely needed in Australian journalism.

“However, I don’t recall that as a journalist he ever spoke truth to power…”

Well thank fuck for that. I’d hate to have that idiotic and trite cliche on my tombstone.

  13. Geoff Honnor says:

    Vale Matt.

  14. Darlene says:

He always came across as someone with a good sense of humour and decency.

On an election weekend, death reminds us that there are more important things in life than the stoushes involved with politics.

  15. Sam Ward says:

The only east coast Journo who refused to put the boot into the Fremantle Dockers, all Freo fans will miss Matt Price.

  16. Zoe says:

jinmaro, he was a sketch writer and should be judged as such. (And Annabel Crabb’s “Under the flag” pieces are sketch too.) I think your comments are ungracious.

  17. jinmaro says:

I know it is quite representative. But, admittedly, an opinion, if strongly held.

  18. Guy says:

He disappeared so suddenly from the pages of the Australian in the middle of the election campaign, and the terribly sad thing was that just about everybody was too caught up in events to pay it too much mind.

A tragic reminder of how fragile life is.

  19. ivap says:

Sad news indeed. My condolences to the family.

  20. FDB says:

Heave Ho, Matthew Price. Heave freaking ho.

  21. tssk says:

One of the best journo’s the Australian had and always on the ball on The Insiders.

Condolences to the family, the loss is both yours and ours.
